Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa announced that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is preparing to hold a massive public mobilization and peaceful protest in Colombo on September 24th against the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
He stated that the current government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is attempting to establish single-party rule by undermining judicial independence and the rule of law through the 22nd Amendment, and that the Opposition’s objective is to defeat this attempt.
The Opposition Leader noted that even though the government holds a two-thirds majority in Parliament, that majority power should not be used to destroy the democratic rights of the people; he added that he seeks the support of all progressive citizens to defeat this government initiative.
He made these remarks while addressing a meeting of Samagi Jana Balawegaya local government members and electorate organizers from the Colombo District, held today (13) at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
