Galle Additional Magistrate Lakmini Widanagamage ordered a fine of 1.78 million rupees yesterday to a Russian tourist who carelessly entered his car into the railway crossing. In addition, a fine of 56,000 rupees was imposed for the traffic offence.
On 23rd January 2023, this Russian, named Alexander Loskotu, drove his car along with another passenger into the railway crossing where it collided with the express train from Beliatte to Maho.
He and the other passenger who were injured have been admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
The locomotive and the color signaling system were severely damaged in the incident. The police had registered a case against the traveler under the Motor Traffic Regulations, and the department sought compensation for the damage caused to the railway property.
When the case was heard yesterday, the lawyer who appeared for the suspect told the court that the tourist is preparing to leave the country on February 29 and he will plead guilty.
