The Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Gampaha Division has initiated an investigation into the detention of a young man who was assaulted by a group of people in the Yakkala Police Cell without hospitalizing him, the police said.
A group of people who had crossed the road in the Yakkala area on the Colombo-Kandy road, who had dropped a monk at the temple and was returning home, attacked him. The group that attacked him later dragged the young man to a land near the temple where the monk had hired the vehechle attacked him again, the complaint filed by the young man with the IGP in this regard states.
The complaint further states that the police who arrived at the scene where the young man was being attacked made no attempt to stop the attack, and that after the attack was over, the young man was taken to the police station in a three-wheeler, and that when the young man, who was in a critical condition, begged to be hospitalized, he was threatened without being hospitalized.
The Police threatening to remand him that he will charge for keeping heroin. The suspects in the police cell tried to give the young man water, but the police stopped it, and the next morning, the young man’s mother came to the police station and informed the OIC through another group, and he was hospitalized at around 10 am.
Following a video posted on a YouTube channel about the assault or the inhuman treatment of the young man at the police station, the Gampaha Divisional Superintendent of Police has initiated an investigation on the orders of Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya and on the instructions of the Gampaha Disabara DIG.
