The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Ranga Dissanayake, alleges that there is an attempt to sabotage the investigations initiated by the Commission.
Mr. Dissanayake made this statement to the Island newspaper in response to a recent statement made by former JVP front leader Nandana Gunathilaka.
Nandana Gunathilaka emphasized while participating in a Hiru ‘Balaya’ program that the Director General of the CIABOC has served as a member of the JVP Legal Committee. Therefore, he cannot be considered an independent person, he emphasized. However, the person appointed to the post of Director General of the Bribery Commission must give an affidavit stating that he does not hold a position in any political party.
Responding to this, the Chairman of the Commission for the Prevention of Bribery and Corruption, Ranga Dissanayake, says that he worked as a lawyer from 2000 to 2004 and joined the judiciary in October 2004.
“There is absolutely no basis for this statement. I have never been involved in any JVP formation,” says Ranga Dissanayake.
He further stated that he intends to discuss the issue with the CIABOC commissioners. “Appropriate steps will be taken in this regard in the future,” he adds.
