The Sri Lanka Bar Association, which expresses deep concern regarding the recent statements made by Minister Tiran Alas, requests President Ranil Wickramasinghe to remove him from the Ministry of Public Security.
“Eliminating criminals from the country is not a sin, don’t be afraid to use the weapon in your hand For what is right, we will stand up for you.” said Minister Alas at the Katukurunda Police Special Task Force Training Camp Dispersal Parade. The Sri Lanka Bar Association says it condemns the statement.
Commenting on the Minister’s statement, BASL President Kaushalya Navaratne and Secretary Chatura Galhena said such statements are against the basic principles of the Constitution and established criminal justice procedures.
BASL stressed that justice, including punishment for wrongdoers, falls only within the jurisdiction of the courts as mandated by the Constitution, which requires adherence to due process, thorough investigations and fair trials.
