Nepal’s Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli has resigned, foreign media reports. He resigned after protests against the implementation of an IRA court ruling banning social media left 19 people dead and property worth crores of rupees damaged in a single day.
In addition, the Nepalese government’s social media ban was lifted this morning. Several other ministers have resigned from their posts, citing police shootings of protesters and government corruption.
Protesters defied a curfew and stormed the country’s parliament and set the building on fire, foreign media reports. Protesters have attacked the office of the country’s largest party, the Nepali Congress, and have reportedly set fire to the homes of several prominent politicians.
Foreign media reports that at least ten people died in police shootings around Parliament, with the total death toll estimated at 30.
