Postal workers begin satyagraha

The postal trade unions on strike have begun a satyagraha in front of the Central Post Office in Colombo.

It is reported that representatives of several trade unions including the Lanka Teachers’ Union and the Workers’ Struggle Center are also participating in the satyagraha. It is said that special police security has been deployed around the Central Post Office due to the satyagraha.

However, ‘Ada Derana’ reporters said that the police have been called to the Colombo Central Post Office due to some people obstructing the duties of the employees who are preparing to send parcels.

The strike, which was started by the postal trade unions from midnight on the 17th based on 19 main demands, is continuing for the 5th day today and the people who came to receive postal services were facing great difficulties due to the strike.

Meanwhile, the Treasurer of the All Ceylon Sub-Postmasters’ Association, Ravindra Amarajeewa, stated that he would request other postal trade union representatives to end the strike without causing inconvenience to the public.

Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara had issued a statement stating that all postal employees who do not report for duty today will be treated as if they have left their posts.
