A police officer injured in a shooting that occurred in the Kadamottawa area of Katunayake this afternoon (15) has been admitted to the Negombo Hospital. The incident occurred when the police officer was arresting a drug dealer.
The suspected drug dealer was riding a motorcycle when two police officers who were chasing him stopped the suspect in the Kadamottawa area and took action to arrest him after questioning him.
While the suspect was preparing to be taken to the police station, a police officer went to bring the motorcycle on which the suspect had come. Acting with that permission, the suspect snatched the police officer’s service firearm, shot the officer with it and fled on another motorcycle. Investigations are underway to find the absconding suspect.
