Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that an investigation is to be conducted regarding a statement made to the media by former MP Udaya Gammanpila. Gammanpila had claimed that Ven. Gnanasara Thero who is currently imprisoned told him that the moment his (the Thero’s) robes were removed had been recorded on a mobile phone and shown to a high-ranking government official.
The Minister made these remarks while responding to inquiries from journalists regarding the statement during the press briefing held today to announce Cabinet decisions. Stating that this revelation should by no means be taken lightly, the Minister noted that the details had been disclosed to the media; he added that anyone hearing the account might even wonder if it was former MP Gammanpila himself who had actually seen the video.
The Minister further stated that, following a complaint lodged by the prison authorities regarding this matter, the police would conduct an investigation to uncover the facts.
