IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya said that a more formal program is currently being implemented to suppress underworld activities than the existing system. He said this while speaking to the media after visiting the Mahanayake Theros in Kandy today (17).
The IGP said that the support of the tri-forces and the public is essential to curb these crimes.
The IGP also said that some underworld activities and drug trafficking have received some political blessings as well as the support of some police officers.
The IGP also said that the current political environment is very good for establishing the law and stated that he will never receive orders from him to hide or ignore any crime. The IGP further commented as follows
“If we take the shootings, we have investigated them and arrested the suspects. We are also working on a more elaborate program. For this, we have a plan to get the support of other institutions, especially the tri-forces, and the public.
The drug trade did not happen yesterday, nor did the underworld killings happen yesterday. Certain political blessings were received, the support of the police and officers was received, people from the tri-forces were used for this, drug addicts were used for this. So, these operations are being carried out by a group of negligent individuals who have gone abroad. We are working with the international community on these.”
