The funeral of the young man from Kahawatta, who was allegedly killed for providing information to the police regarding a drug racket, was held at the family cemetery this afternoon (03).
The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Imantha Suranjan. A tense situation has erupted between the police and the villagers this afternoon after the funeral of the young man.
This was in a setting where about 150 police officers were deployed for security in the village.
Relatives of the murdered young man and villagers attacked the police with stones, blaming them.
In the face of the attacks, the police have left the area and later deployed units and fired tear gas to control the villagers.
Several villagers have reportedly been injured in tear gas attacks.
