The government raised the plantation labor salary to 1,700 rupees for the first time yesterday (10) at the head office of Alkaduwa Plantation Company in Matale.
The Commissioner General of Labor had decided to increase the total daily wages of plantation workers to 1,700 rupees in the gazette notice issued on April 30, and several plantation companies have already approached the court against this. The Lanka Plantation Company and the Plantation Employers Union continue to refuse to pay the increased wages.
In this background, Matale Alkaduwa Plantation Company had taken steps today to provide increased wages for plantation workers as per the government’s decision.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the Lowland Plantation Workers’ Union held a demonstration in Elpitiya town demanding an increased daily wage of 1,700 rupees.
