Online Safty Act to be passed in January

The Presidential Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Professor Ashu Marasinghe says that the Bill on Online Security will be debated and enacted during the parliamentary week starting on January 23.

Public Security Minister Tiran Alas said the ministry is seeking input from industry stakeholders such as Google and Facebook for inclusion in the final enactment of the bill.

After this Act was presented to the Parliament, it was challenged in the Supreme Court, where a number of amendments were proposed in its decision. The civil society activists requested a period of three months to get the ideas and guidance needed for the amendments.

However, the Supreme Court emphasized the need to pass such a bill for internet security.
