NPP MP breaks into church, destroys statues

The National People’s Power Party’s Kayts chief organizer and eight suspects were arrested yesterday (July 26) in connection with an incident of vandalism at a church in the Kayts area.

The priest of the church has filed a complaint with the Kayts police regarding the demolition of a statue of the Virgin Mary worth about Rs. 5 million installed at the Melingimunai Narayampathi Matha Church in Kayts. Investigations have been initiated based on this complaint.

Last evening, a group of people held a drinking party at a place adjacent to the church and were shouting and behaving in an indecent manner, after which the priests of the church asked them to leave the place.

At this time, a group of suspects who had a conflict with the priests entered the church at night and damaged the statue of the Virgin Mary that had been brought from India and installed, and also damaged other property in the church.

The suspects arrested by the Kayts police have been produced before the Kayts court.
