The National System Operator (Pvt.) Ltd. states that it expects to resume electricity generation at the Norochcholai coal-fired power plant by tomorrow (Thursday).
Its Chairman, B. L. Pradeep Priyadarshana Perera, told the Daily Mirror that the shutdown of the power plant resulted in a 250-megawatt shortfall, which necessitated the planning of power cuts.
“Currently, we require 2,800 megawatts of power to meet electricity demand during the night. However, we are facing a shortfall; on Monday night, we were only able to supply 2,570 megawatts,” he stated.
The Norochcholai ‘Lakvijaya’ coal-fired power plant may have also shut down due to an island-wide blackout, as the plant requires a continuous supply of electricity to operate safely.
