The Police Financial Crimes Division has filed a case against former Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the Matara Magistrate’s Court in connection with the purchase of a one and a half acre land in the Brownshill area, Matara. The Matara Magistrate, through Magistrate Chathuranga Dissanayake, has issued a warrant against him after he failed to appear in the case on several occasions. The Matara Magistrate has rejected the request made by Basil Rajapaksa’s lawyers to recall the warrant.
President’s Counsel Anil De Silva, who appeared before the court on behalf of Basil Rajapaksa yesterday (19), submitted medical reports stating that his client was unable to appear in court that day as he was undergoing treatment abroad due to illness.
Accordingly, taking into account the suspect’s health condition, his lawyers filed a motion today requesting the court to issue an order to recall the warrant issued against him.
The suspect did not appear before the court and stated that there was no legal possibility to recall the warrant in such a manner, and the Magistrate issued the main order to execute the warrant issued against Basil Rajapaksa in the same manner.
