The Department of Meteorology states that the low-pressure area currently located over the Andaman Sea region of the Bay of Bengal, northeast of the island, is expected to intensify further into a depression within the next 24 hours. Consequently, rainfall and wind activity over the Bay of Bengal are likely to increase.
Therefore, the Department urges the fishing and naval communities to remain vigilant regarding this situation and to pay close attention to future announcements and forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology.
Showers or thundershowers are likely to occur intermittently in the sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo, and Galle. In the remaining sea areas around the island, scattered showers or thundershowers may occur during the evening or night. Winds will blow from the south-west at speeds of approximately 30–40 km/h. The Department states that wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 km/h in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai via Mannar to Chilaw, and from Matara via Hambantota to Pottuvil; these sea areas are also expected to become rough at times.
Wave heights may rise to approximately 2.0–2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam via Colombo, Galle, and Matara to Pottuvil. Temporary strong winds may occur during thundershowers, potentially causing these sea areas to become very rough for short periods.
