Lawyers do not agree to scanner checks to protect professional dignity

Lawyers have decided since the 20th not to pass through the scanner installed to check all persons entering the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Although they did not pass through the scanner, the lawyers have agreed to be checked by police officers on security duty near the gate of the court complex for weapons and explosives.

“Lawyers are disrespected by being checked by scanners for someone who has been beaten up in court. Therefore, we have expressed our opposition to the scanning. However, the association has agreed to be checked by police officers using the scanning equipment,” said Senior Attorney Gunaratne Wanninayake, President of the Bar Association of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
