The asset declaration submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha for the year 2025 is being hotly debated on social media. The reason for this is that the information in this document does not match the Minister’s previous statements and his assets.
Minister Lal Kantha’s asset declaration was certified by Deputy Minister of Public Security, Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala, on December 26, 2025. Social media users point out that the minister’s three-story house in Weliwita, Kaduwela, which has been the subject of controversy in the past, is not included in this asset declaration.
Participating in a discussion on an online channel regarding the new house, he said that he moved there in late 2024. Accordingly, social media users are questioning the fact that the house was not included in the asset declaration prepared in December 2025.
However, according to this document, information about buildings and lands worth about Rs. 67 million is shown among the immovable properties claimed to be owned by the Minister. In addition, the statement states that he owns gold bars and jewelry worth about 4.6 million rupees.
It states that the car he owns worth 4.5 million rupees was purchased with money given by a friend. It states that he has made investments in 10 companies registered in the stock market and has 9 million rupees as savings in bank accounts.
It also states that an amount of 11.5 million ninety thousand ninety seven is a loan to be paid for the construction of a house. That loan was taken by the Minister on May 26, 2025, and as stated in this document, the loan agreement must be paid before February 26, 2026.
