A prison spokesman stated that the unrest had first erupted last night (6) and that steps were taken to control it later. However, unrest has again erupted among the inmates this morning. It is reported that a group of inmates have also damaged the prison hospital.
As a result, tear gas has also been fired to control the situation.
Meanwhile, some unrest also erupted among a group of inmates at the New Magazine Prison in Colombo last night, due to which the police, the Police Riot Control Unit and the Police Special Task Force (STF) were immediately called in and the situation was brought under control by this morning.
