There is no need to buy salt in bulk due to fears of a salt shortage, says the new chairman of the Hambantota Lanka Salt Company, T. Nandanathilaka.
Taking over as chairman, he said that the Lanka Hambantota Salt Company currently has 6,000 metric tons of salt, which is sufficient until January.
The chairman also said that preparations have been made to import 30,000 metric tons of salt in anticipation of a salt shortage.
The chairman said that salt production has decreased significantly in 2024, and he also said that the reason for this is that the two salt pans in Jaffna were not developed and used for salt production even after the end of the military situation in 2009.
