Former Immigration and Emigration Controller General Harsha Ilukpitiya has been sentenced to two years in jail by the Supreme Court. He was found guilty of contempt of court for failing to implement an interim injunction ordered by the Supreme Court.
The court issued an interim injunction preventing the implementation of the cabinet decision taken during the previous government to transfer the e-visa issuance process to two private companies. Accordingly, the Supreme Court had issued an interim injunction to the Immigration and Emigration Controller to reinstate the old system of issuing visas.
