Hambantota International Port Group states that the port has handled over one million container units since commencing operations with new gantry cranes.
According to the company’s latest announcement, the port handled 428,036 container units in 2025 and has handled 574,196 units so far in 2026.
Consequently, the combined total for the two years has risen to 1,002,232 container units. Wilson Qu, CEO of Hambantota International Port Group, stated that this milestone reflects the port’s ongoing development into a competitive container port serving regional and international trade.
He attributed this growth to close collaboration with shipping lines, enhanced operational reliability, and a prompt response to customer needs. Notably, the port handled 80,325 container units in June, marking its highest monthly container volume to date.
Hambantota International Port Group also stated that measures are being taken to upgrade infrastructure including new cranes, berthing facilities, container yards, and refrigerated storage to further expand container handling capacity.
