Four police constables at the Wadduwa police station have been arrested and suspended over the death of a suspect who was released on bail after being in police custody, the police media spokesperson said. The arrested police officers are scheduled to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
The deceased youth was arrested by the Wadduwa police and later released on bail. The suspect, who was admitted to the hospital after being released, died under unclear circumstances, and his family alleges that he was assaulted by police officers.
Residents of the Thalpitiya area of Wadduwa today gathered in front of the Wadduwa police station and staged a protest demanding justice for the victim and his family. Officers were called from Bandaragama, Pinwatte, Moronthuduwa, Hirana and other surrounding police stations to manage the situation. He also said that if scientific evidence proves that the death was caused by police assault, strict action will be taken against the officers responsible.
