Four people travelling in a van died in an accident in Thalawa.

A horrific accident has occurred when a van collided head-on with a lorry near the Thalawa Mirigama junction on the Anuradhapura-Kurunegala main road. The accident occurred when a lorry travelling from Anuradhapura towards Kurunegala collided head-on with a van coming from the opposite direction.

Four people travelling in the van, including the driver, died in the accident that took place this morning. Three of them died at the Thalawa Hospital while the other person died after being admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, police sources say. Two other injured persons are also receiving treatment at the hospital and their condition is critical, police sources say.

It is reported that all four people who died in the accident were travelling in the van, including the driver of the van. The identities of any of the deceased have not been confirmed yet. The driver of the lorry has also been admitted to the hospital.

The van belongs to a private garment factory and was travelling from Ja Ela to Mullaitivu, Thalawa Police said.

Police said the cause of the accident was the driver of the van falling asleep. Thalawa Police are conducting further investigations into the accident.
