Ruwini Gomes, Deputy Director of the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, said that about Rs 120 million will be needed to repair the suspension bridge and repair the damage to the plant nursery and floriculture research laboratory, as well as the compost yard.

The park is bordered by the Mahaweli River on three sides, so the flood impact is high.

“The orchid nursery and other plant nurseries were affected. The orchids were covered in mud. We are cleaning, treating and replanting them,” she said. National Botanic Gardens Director General H.C.P. Jayaweera said steps were being taken to treat the plants and keep them alive.
