Flood risk in areas surrounding the Mahaweli River due to heavy rains.

The Department of Irrigation has warned of a potential minor flood situation in low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River, following heavy rains across many parts of the island last night.

In a statement, the Department noted that this minor flood threat has arisen due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahaweli River over the past few hours.

Consequently, the Department further stated that there is a risk of minor flooding in the low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River within the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division.

Accordingly, the Department has advised residents of these areas and motorists using roads passing through them to exercise extreme caution regarding this situation.
