Electricity workers are preparing for a strike starting on the 21st.

The Ceylon Electricity Workers’ Union is urging the government to immediately withdraw the proposed Electricity Board Privatization Act. Ranjan Jayalal, the general secretary of the association, stated that they are ready to defeat the government’s attempt to divide the electricity board into 15 companies while attending the press conference held in Colombo yesterday.

Expanding on his comments, he said, “A draft bill has been prepared to divide the Electricity Board into 15 companies. We have information that this bill will be submitted to parliament in the next few days.

The act of handing over the power board to companies should be withdrawn immediately. Otherwise, all trade unions of the Electricity Board will join together on the 21st, and we will all leave the power plant office and gather at Viharamahadevi Park.…”
