Electricity tariffs to increase

It is reported that the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Electricity Board, Dr. Tilak Siyambalapitiya, has informed the Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Professor Anil Jayaratne Fernando, that an emergency electricity tariff increase will be implemented in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission in 2024.

Copies of the letter dated March 24 have been forwarded to the Minister of Power, the Secretary to the Ministry, the Chairman and Commissioners of the Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission and all responsible parties.

According to the guidelines issued by the Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission in 2024, electricity tariffs can be increased or decreased by 10% without consulting the Commission in cases where the profit or loss of the Electricity Board exceeds Rs. 15,000 million.

The Chairman has informed in the letter that the prices will be revised in accordance with the Public Utilities Commission’s 2024 recommendations, as the wholesupply bank account of the Ceylon Electricity Board has exceeded the negative limit of Rs. 15,000 million by the week ending March 9th to 16th, 2025.
