Citing a list of cost increases worth billions of rupees, including billions in energy and financing costs and repayment of Mahinda Rajapaksa-era loans for the Uma Oya project, the Ceylon Electricity Board has sought permission from the Public Utilities Commission for another electricity tariff hike.
Accordingly, the Ceylon Electricity Board has reportedly requested the Public Utilities Commission to grant permission for a total tariff hike of 6.8% for the period from October to December.
If this price hike goes ahead, it will be the third price revision implemented this year. The Ceylon Electricity Board will severely impact more than 7.2 million consumers.
The Ceylon Electricity Board has already planned an operational overhaul and trade unions are protesting against it.
