Doctors to go on strike from 8 am today

The Government Medical Officers’ Association says that doctors in all hospitals across the island will begin a strike from 8 am today. The island-wide symbolic strike is being carried out to demand that the Ministry of Health stop the illegal transfers of doctors and to obtain several other demands, says the Secretary of the association, Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa.

However, Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa stated that this trade union action will not be implemented in maternity hospitals, children’s hospitals, Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, special kidney units, tri-service hospitals and the National Institute of Mental Health.

The Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association told the media that if the government does not pay sufficient attention to this symbolic strike, they will engage in strict trade union action in the future.
