Sarvajanabalaya Party MP Dilith Jayaweera today brought a private member’s motion to Parliament to remove the educational qualifications of MPs when introducing them. He stated that the titles of Professor and Doctor are professional qualifications and that this creates a division in society. Commenting further, he said:
”I propose to remove the titles of Professor and Doctor in front of the names of MPs in the address of the House. These are professions. If these are removed in the address of the House, it will also be good for the politics of the lower class. Because this is a division in society.
There are people in this Parliament who do various professions. Professor is related to the university. Doctor is related to the hospital. Therefore, I propose that it would be good to remove the pieces in front when addressing each other in the House.
