The necessary steps will be taken soon to permanently address the deer population, which is a serious problem for residents of 6 Grama Seva Divisions under the Homagama Divisional Secretariat, said Colombo District Parliamentarian and Homagama Coordinating Committee Chairman Aruna Panagoda. He said this after an inspection tour of the area.
The MP said that a small herd of deer that roamed the rural service divisions of Homagama North, Homagama East, Mullegama, Habarakada, Pitipana and Mawathgama about 10 years ago has now grown into a large herd of deer, and the deer have become a serious problem for the lives of the residents of Homagama, an urban area where people make a living from agriculture, as the deer have become a serious problem for the people of those areas.
These deer, which belong to a very sensitive animal group, will be captured by a team of the Army under the leadership of officers of the Wildlife Department and with the cooperation of the residents of the area, and necessary measures will be taken in the near future to capture them without harming their lives and release them to a suitable sanctuary, the MP further said.
