The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal filed by former DIG Vass Gunawardena and five others against their sentences in the murder of businessman Mohamed Shyam.
The decision was announced today by Colombo High Court Judge Aditya Patabendi. The defendants in the case, former DIG Vass Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Gunawardena and others, were produced before the court by prison officials.
The lawyer appearing for the defendants, while presenting the facts before the court, inquired about the date on which the sentence imposed on them would be implemented since the defendants were seeking a presidential pardon.
The High Court judge pointed out that only the Supreme Court can take a decision in this regard.
