An inmate sentenced to death for the murder of former Polonnaruwa District MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala has died after falling from a building at Welikada Prison.
He was immediately taken to hospital due to serious injuries sustained in the fall from a building, but reportedly died while receiving treatment. However, no further details have been released regarding the incident, and sources say that the prison authorities have initiated an investigation.
Twelve people convicted of the murder of former Polonnaruwa District MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security guard in 2022 were sentenced to death on February 11, 2026. The person who died in this accident today was also sentenced to death.
