The Expert Committee of Astrologers has today (24) formally filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department against the Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebration organized by renowned beautician Chandimal Jayasinghe.
The association points out in its complaint that the celebration has been conducted in a manner that severely distorts the traditional New Year rituals and cultural identity of the country.
They point out that Chandimal Jayasinghe has caused serious cultural damage by acting in a manner that damages the ancient values of the Sinhala New Year celebration. They have also expressed their protest against the provision of wrong cultural examples to future generations by publicizing this distorted celebration on social media.
Accordingly, the committee further requests the Criminal Investigation Department to immediately conduct a formal investigation into the incident and take appropriate legal action against the parties responsible for it.
A competition involving a young woman eating a bun on her stomach during the New Year festival drew serious criticism on social media.
