A number of Chinese hospitals are closing maternity wards.

It is reported that the birth rate in China is falling rapidly. Due to this situation, delivery services have been stopped in several major hospitals in the country, according to foreign media.

In the past two months, hospitals in several provinces, including eastern Zhejiang and southern Jiangxi, have announced the closure of their maternity units. It is reported that these hospitals provide treatment for other women’s diseases and due to the decrease in the demand for deliveries, the maternity departments have to be closed.

The Fifth People’s Hospital of Ganzhou City, Jiangxi has announced on its official WeChat account that obstetric services will be suspended from March 11. In addition, Zhejiang’s Jiangshan Hospital of Traditional Medicine has also published an announcement on its WeChat page saying that its maternity department will be poisoned from February 1.

China, where the rapid growth of the elderly population is a problem, has paid close attention to the increasing desire of young couples to have children as a solution to the situation.

China’s population declined for the second year in a row in 2023 due to a record low birth rate and a wave of COVID-19 deaths following the end of the coronavirus pandemic. China’s total population fell by 2.75 million, or 0.2 percent, to 1.409 billion last year, the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics said.
