The Supreme Court has set March 19 as the date for hearing the Fundamental Rights Petition filed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s lawyers against the reduction of his security.
The petition was taken up before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Janak de Silva and Sampath Abeykoon yesterday.
Additional Solicitor General Warunika Hettige, who appeared for the respondents in the case, requested the court to grant her time to obtain instructions from the respondents and file objections to the petition.
Accordingly, the court allowed the respondents to file objections to the case and also informed the petitioners to file counter-objections if necessary.
President’s Counsel Ali Sabri, who appeared for petitioner Mahinda Rajapaksa, presented evidence before the court and stated that his client’s security had been reduced without a proper security assessment.
