Cabraal faces new charges.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption is reportedly considering calling two defendants who were acquitted in the case as witnesses in a new case to be filed against former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal if he fails to repay the estimated losses incurred by the government in the Greek bond scandal within three months.

The commission is considering filing a new indictment against Cabraal as his lawyers take steps to make legal representations regarding the condition imposed on him by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption when it withdrew the case against the former Central Bank Governor.

Cabraal was conditionally released by the Colombo High Court this week from the case in which he was indicted for investing in Greek bonds during an economic crisis and thereby causing a loss to the state.

He was ordered to repay the estimated loss of Rs. 1.8 billion to the government within three months.

Regarding the conditional release, Cabraal’s lawyer Dilan Ratnayake said that further steps would be taken after discussions with his client.

Cabraal told the Sunday Times that his lawyers had already stated their position to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and the court.

A senior official of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, responding to a query made in this regard, said that they are waiting for the Cabraal government to reimburse the loss incurred and that further steps will be taken depending on how it responds.
