British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned, foreign media reports.
He officially announced his resignation on television from Downing Street, congratulated his successor and said he would serve as prime minister until he takes office.
British political sources say that internal problems and pressure in the ruling Labour Party have led to his resignation. British newspapers report that Starmer may have felt the pressure from within the Labour Party after his main political rival Andy Burnham won a decisive victory in a by-election for a parliamentary seat in northwest England.
Following Burnham’s controversial victory, Keir Starmer said he was unfit to lead the Labour Party at the next election.
