A request to be careful with water and electricity in the face of El Nino

The Department of Meteorology states that due to the active ‘El Nino’ weather condition, there may be severe hot weather and low rainfall across the island in the coming months.

Accordingly, the authorities are requesting the public to use water and electricity sparingly considering the current situation.

The Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Ajith Wijemanne, states that this El Nino condition is likely to continue for another 8 to 10 months, that is, until March or April 2027.

Although some rainfall may be received in the Sabaragamuwa, Western, Northwestern, Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya areas in the next few days, extremely dry and hot weather will prevail in the North, North Central, East and Hambantota areas from late July to early August.
