Namal Rajapaksa, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, MP, says that if a proposal to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court judges is implemented, a two-thirds majority in Parliament will not be enough and that the people’s opinion should be sought through a referendum.
The current government has completely lost the trust of the people due to its failure to fulfill its election promises and imposing an unfair tax burden in a context of rising cost of living.
He pointed out that the government, which is unable to provide solutions to the rising tax burden and public problems, is helpless in the face of organized crime rings. He said that even prisons are severely overcrowded due to delays in medical examination reports and judicial proceedings, and that it is ridiculous to amend the Constitution to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court judges, forgetting such problems.
Pointing out that the government is taking action despite the opposition from the legal and judicial sectors, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa emphasized that if the government feels that this is a national priority, it should hold a referendum and obtain the approval of the people.
