A Dutch-era tunnel was also found in Chillaw.

The Department of Archeology says that the ruins of an old tunnel were found during an emergency excavation in Chillaw.James Street.

It was found when a group of employees of the Water Supply and Drainage Board has done an emergency excavation for a maintenance purpose.

It is reported that a part of a brick wall said to have been used for the tunnel is also clearly observed at the excavation site.

The building that houses the current Chillaw. District Court was used as a prison cell during the Dutch era and the residents of the area suspect that this tunnel may have a connection with it.

Archeology officials do not reject that opinion either. Parts of such a tunnel have been found before, but no drilling has been done in connection with it.
