A divided verdict from the court on Ranil Wickremesinghe

The Supreme Court has ruled that the emergency regulations declared nationwide under the Public Security Act by then Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe to control the protesters on July 17, 2022, have violated fundamental human rights.

The majority of the judges of the three-judge Supreme Court bench have ruled that the emergency regulations issued by Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe under Section 02 of the Public Security Act are arbitrary and void.

Chief Justice Murdu Fernando and Yasantha Kodagoda, who represented the bench, have announced this verdict.

However, Justice Arjuna Obeysekara, a member of the three-judge bench, while announcing his verdict, said that the Acting President’s declaration of emergency does not violate fundamental human rights.

The Centre for Policy Alternatives, Ambiga Sathkunanathan, a former commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, and the Liberal Youth Movement had filed these fundamental rights petitions.
