A competition between international companies to set up a nuclear power plant in Sri Lanka

It is reported that several well-known companies in the world are keen to invest in Sri Lanka’s nuclear power plant.

It is reported that a delegation from China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) is expected to visit Sri Lanka soon, Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation of the US (USNC) and Canada’s Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL) are interested in investing in Sri Lanka.

Apart from this, CNNC is among the organizations that have submitted proposals for setting up such a power plant in the country. Besides Russia’s Rosatom, France’s electricité de France (EDF) and Denmark’s Seaborg have submitted proposals.

In its plan to reduce carbon emissions, the government has decided to include nuclear power to the country. Recently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team of experts also concluded a seven-day safety review of Sri Lanka’s selection process to identify potential sites to build Sri Lanka’s first nuclear power plant.

The government is drafting legislation to regulate nuclear power generation and the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) is gearing up to call for expressions of interest from potential investors.
