The bribery case against Wimal Weerawansa will be heard

The Colombo High Court has issued an order today, scheduling the bribery case against MP Wimal Weerawansa to be heard on July 17.

The Bribery Commission has filed the case, alleging that M.P Wimal Weerawansa committed an offense under the Bribery Act by failing to disclose assets and the source of income amounting to 75 million rupees during his ministerial tenure from 2010 to 2015.

During today’s hearing before Colombo High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe, MP Wimal Weerawansa did not appear in court, citing illness. Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena, representing the Bribery Commission, highlighted that the case was filed in 2017, but the trial has not yet commenced.

After considering the circumstances, the court ordered the case to be called on July 17 and issued a notice to MP Wimal Weerawansa, requiring his presence in court on that day.
