2.8 million chickens have died due to the floods. A hen is selling for Rs. 50.

Anton Nishantha Appuhami, Chairman of the All Ceylon Egg Traders Association, says that no animal that died due to the disaster situation in the country has been put on the market for sale as meat.

He said at a press conference held today (07) that the rumors circulating in this regard are false.

He said that over 2.8 million egg-laying hens have died due to the disaster situation and as a result, the price of an egg has increased to Rs. 45-50.

“The entire country has been severely affected by the current flood threat. Not only our people, but also all animal products, eggs, milk, animals, including goats, have been washed away in large quantities.

Although the problem affected all areas, it severely affected the Deduru Oya and Mahaweli valleys. The farm owners in those areas suffered a huge loss. Mainly due to the overflow of the Deduru Oya, all the farms up to Chilaw were submerged. Not a single cage where there was a farm was found. More than 2.8 million egg-laying hens alone have died.

We are saddened that an egg that was supposed to be sold to the people of Sri Lanka for 26 or 27 rupees has suddenly become 45.50. But there is nothing else I can do. This will be in even greater demand by Christmas. I have to say it with great sadness. I am confident that we will face a huge egg crisis. There is. There is a rumor that dead animals were put in the market. That did not happen. I went to see the dead animals three days later. By then, those animals were already dead. .
