115 medicines fail at 11 months

According to the data of the Ministry of Health’s Medical Supply Division, 115 medicines have failed quality tests so far in 2023.

About 58 of the drugs that failed the quality tests were manufactured in India and 45 drugs were produced locally. Others are from countries like China, Pakistan, Japan and Bangladesh.

Among the drugs found to have failed quality checks, some were withdrawn, held or suspended.

In addition, 35 batches of Flucloxacillin Cap were withdrawn in May, and this drug is manufactured by the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation in Ratmalana.

Several complications and deaths were reported due to drug quality problems
