100 families removed as Gal Oya embankment nears breach

Ampara District Secretary Chinthaka Abeywickrama says that 100 families in Gal Oya Suduwella village have been removed to a safer place as the eroded banks of Gal Oya are at risk of breaking and overflowing due to the heavy rains.

He says that the banks of Gal Oya have been eroded again from the Kota Wehera area, which could lead to flooding.

Farmers point out that a part of the road parallel to Gal Oya has also been destroyed due to bank erosion, making it impossible to obtain water for their crops. The evacuated group is currently being housed at a temple in the area, the District Secretary further said.
