Foreign media reports that the US government is considering abolishing the current 60-day grace period for certain foreign workers employed under the ‘H1B’ category to find a new job when they lose their jobs.
The proposal is already being reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
If this new proposal becomes law, foreigners who lose their jobs and the opportunity to switch to another American employer or change their visa category will lose it. Accordingly, they are to be immediately deported from the US.
The majority of H-1B visa recipients are Indians, and according to data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), 71% of the total H-1B visa applications approved in 2024 were applications from Indian nationals. The number of people of Indian descent living in the United States now exceeds 5.2 million.
